The hike in railway fares came into play from yesterday. There is a 2 paisa per kilometer increase in electric train fares. A ticket from Beach Station to Tambaram now costs Rs. 10 compared to previous cost of Rs. 7.
Tickets that were Rs. 7, Rs. 8 and Rs. 9 are now Rs. 10 but those that were Rs. 6 are now Rs. 5. Fares have been revised according to distance – destinations that are farther have been increased and those that are closer, decreased.
Rail Officials have said that even though fares have increased, bus fares have been decreased so travelers have not been adversely affected. Moreover, prices of electric train fares in Chennai are much lesser than Mumbai, they said.
