The first gasifier charged crematorium in Vellore district was inaugurated, near Vellore New Bus Stand on Saturday by minister Dr V S Vijay. Vellore Corporation Mayor P Kartiyayini, and local body councillors were present on the occasion. Commissioner P Janaki Raveendran said that this project costs a total of `91 lakh and the campus function in around 1.5 acres of land. A resolution to construct a gasifier crematorium was originally approved by the Vellore Corporation in the year 2009.
The construction of the building and the facilities were completed in 2010. However, it was not brought to the public use for until two years, as no authority was ready to undertake its maintenance. Meanwhile, a total of 11 Rotary Clubs in Vellore formed a Trust called Vellore Corporation All Rotary Clubs Joint Trust and agreed to take up the maintenance. President of the Trust, Elangovan said, “The Trust would maintain it for 10 years. The crematorium would function from 9.00 am to 6.30 pm everyday and a total of `1, 500 would be charged to cremate each corpse. The building also consists of a Dhyana Mandapam, where mild songs would be played to relax the mind of the relatives of the deceased.” He said that plans were on to operate mortuary van to carry corpses free of cost from the house.
