With the onset of summer and a few weeks to go before the most intense period of summer known as ‘Agni Nakshatram’, Vellore has touched 100 Degrees Fahrenheit already!
In Tamil hot weather is called ‘Veyil’ and because of the intense summer, Vellore has assumed a synonymous name, ‘Veyilore’!
It has been usual at Vellore to experience temperatures around 110 Degrees every summer with each passing year!
Stalls selling water-melon and juices & cool drinks sprung up on the roa-sides even at early February. The sales of water-melon, papaya, musk melon, and pineapple has picked up tremendously across the entire city.
. It was quite hot throughout last Wednesday (18th March) with the temperature touching 100 digress for the first time this summer.
Thursday morning was even hotter than the previous day. Temperature touched 100 Degrees again.
Drinking water shortage has been felt in a few parts of the city.
The number of road-side trees has dwindled considerably. The trees on the top of the 3 peaks of the nearby mountains have also been destroyed by vandals.
City people feel that with these developments, the summer will be more intense this year.
The temporary shelters installed n various parts of the city bus stops have also been removed due to various reasons including road improvement and sewage pipe laying, etc.
Even where the shelters are available, the drivers do not stop in the appropriate location!
The city dwellers expect the police to take immediate corrective action and also to install shelters in all bus stops.
So far, no political parties have shown interest in setting up water stalls. Water stalls will be of great help to the pedestrians to quench their thirst during summer.
