G. Viswanathan, Chancellor of VIT University, detailed the vital requirements for immediate action to improve the standards of education, especially, 10th & 11th Standards:
- Improvement of the standard of teacher training institutes
- Filling all teacher vacancies before the commencement of the new academic year
- Upgrading of the Samacheer Kalvi (uniform standardised education) syllabus to the level of the syllabus of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)
He was presiding over the Achievers’ Appreciation Day function organised by the VIT University to give away awards to the headmasters of the high / higher secondary schools who produced 100 per cent results in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) / Plus Two public examinations in March / April 2014 on the VIT campus here on Thursday.
Main points:
- The government should ensure that the vacancies were filled before the commencement of the academic year so that the students are not affected by insufficient number of teachers.
- Another great malaise in the school education system was low standards of evaluation in secondary grade teacher training.`
- The trend of issuing certificates to many trainees without regularly visiting the schools to handle the practical classes has to be changed.
- Pointing out that there were 42 school boards in India, the VIT Chancellor said that it was high time that the Samacheer Kalvi syllabus was upgraded to that of the CBSE syllabus if not to international levels.
- The Right To Education Act (RTE) guaranteed the right of education to all but has not addressed the issue of ensuring quality of education. The Chancellor appealed to the headmasters/teachers to interact regularly with the parents.
- The government to allot more funds to schools so that the headmasters are able to concentrate on education without being bogged down by mundane problems such as lack of buildings and other educational infrastructure. Unlike other states, Tamil Nadu is yet to upgrade school syllabi.
V. Kumar, Chief Education Officer, Vellore, said that he had taught special techniques to teachers of class 10 and 12 to improve performance of the students in public exams.
Several senior officials from various schools participated.
Awards were given to the headmasters of 32 schools comprising 28 high schools and four higher secondary schools who produced 100 per cent results in the SSLC/Plus Two public exams in Vellore district this year
