The vital organs including heart, of a youth who was declared brain-dead after an accident near Vellore, were donated and sent to Chennai yesterday (19th January) evening.
The youth, Mr. Arun of 23 years age, belonged to the village of Mothakkal. He met with an accident while riding on his bike and was grievously injured. He was damitted in Vellore CMC Hospital for continuous emergeny treatment and the doctors declared him brain-dead yesterday evening. Arun’s father, Mr. Kanniappan, agreed to donate the vital organs of his brain-dead son.
All the vital organs were than removed and sent to different places where patients were awaiting suitable donor organs. The district administration and the police department jointly coordinated in this effort.
After this, the traffic between Vellore and Chennai Madras Mission Hospital & Chennai Global Hospital was regulated and the organs were transported under the control of police.
The transplant operations were commenced. The heart was transplanted im Madras mission hospital. A liver and one kidney was transplanted in Chennai Global Hospital. These were carried in separate ambulances with police vehicles goading in the front & back.
The ambulances started from Vellore by 5.00 PM. They reached Chennai by 7.15 PM. The second kidney and the 2 eyes of the brain-dead youth was sent to CMC Hospital where patients were awaiting for the same.
