Convocation of Thiruvalluar University in vellore

thiUniversites should come up frugal innovations to find cost effective technological solutions to social problem said to W.Selvamurthy,Distinguised Scientist and Chief Controller,Defence Research and Development Organisation(DRDO).

Delivering the 8th convocation of Thiruvalluar University on the Auxilium College compus here on monday.

Dr.Selvamurthy should encourage innovation in socially relavent areas such as water,food and health securities.

we need to orient ourselves and move from traditional approaches of education to those that focus on simulating creativity and innovation among youngsters.”he said

pointing out the unversities received vrey little technologicl support for research and were therfore straved of resraech infrastructuer,the DRDO offical asked the universities to harness all funding resource available from various sources.

DR. Selvamurthy said the DRDO spent Rs. 300 crore annually 10 percent of its anuual buget for academic funding.”The DRDO is planing to increase it to at least Rs.1000 croce.”The DRDO was looking for academic partners to do research.

K.Rosaiah,Governor and Chancellor of Thiruvalluar University presided over the convocation and presented the  diplomas and prize to  56 candidates comprising 33 undergraduate and 23 postgraduate and also Ph.D degrees to 22 candidates.

P.Gunasekaran,vicechancellar of Thiruvalluar university who welcome the gathering said the university has been identified as one of the nine universities in the state for receiving financial support from Tamil Nadu.

The state  government has identified the university for setting up a research center in Mathematics to ensure quality research,and has made provision for the same,he said.

Students’ protests gain momentum across State

12THLAW_1392046fStudent protests demanding justices for war crimes in Sri Lanka gathered momentum across Tamil Nadu on Monday,with class boycotts,facts and demonstrations being reported from various cities and towns.

The protests intensified after eight students of Loyola College here,who were on an indefinite fast since Friday,were taken into police custody in the early hours.

Students in about 25 colleges in the State abstained from classes,accusing Sri Lanka of targeting innocent Tamils during the war against the LTTE.There were reports of relay fasts in at least 14 places.

Demonstrations or processions were held to demand that India vote against Sri Lank in the ongoing UN Human Rights Council session inGeneva,Somes students belonging to government arts and law colleges burnt effigies of Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

In Chennai,students said the arrest of their fasting friends was totally unanticipated as it was a non-violent protest,but the police maintained that they had to step in because the fast was creating law and order problems.Nearly 40 of their supporters were teken to a community hall in Arumbakkam and held there till Monday morning.Students from several city colleges thronged Royapettah Hospital,where protesters whose fast was aborted were administered glucose.By,5 p.m.on monday,the students were discharged from the hospital.
