Brain-Dead Person’s donated Heart brings life to Another – flown from Vellore to Chennai

cardiovascular-health-affects-mental-fitnessThe heart of a worker who was declared ‘brain-dead’ after an accident in Vellore was brought to Chennai by a helicopter.

 

 

 


Mr. Selvaram, aged 45, resident of Gandhinagar,was an employee in a private company.
He was involved in a road accident on 25th November in the Perumugai and was injured on the head. He was admitted in the hospital.

The medical specialists confirmed that he was brain-dead at 3.45 AM on Monday, 28th December.

His wife, Ms. Kavitha, agreed to donate the organs. The kidneys and pancreas were removed and taken to a private hospital.

 

It was decided that the heart would be sent to Chennai for a transplant on a 37-years old male patient from Mumbai being treated in a speciality hospital in Adyar, Chennai.

As it would cause delay if the heart was taken by road, arrangments were made to lift the heart and send i9t theough a helicopter. A special permission was obtained from the Air Traffic Centre at Delhi for this purpose.

Vellore district collector Mr. R. Nandhagopal helped in making these arrangements.

Thus, the removed heart was taken by helicopter at 3.50 PM and reached Chennai at 4.25 PM.

The medical specialists performed the heart transplant operation and declared it to be success.
