APCA convocation: Jail administration is a noble job: Goa IG SVS Gomes

downloadAcademy of Prisons and Correctional Administration, APCA, has been functioning in Vellore giving training to the prison officers.

Prison officials from 4 states including Tamil Nadu are trained here.

The convocation for the prison officers who completed their training was organised yesterday (Monday, 31st August).

APCA Director Ahmed presided on the occasion. Training Engineer Dr. Madanraj led the event. Goa Proson Department Head S VS Gomes was the special guest who gave away the certificates to the candidates who completed the training. He addressed the gathering:

APCA was started in 1979 to provide training to the prison officials from Andhra, Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. So far, 4236 prison officials have been trained by APCA.

Society and circumstances are the main reasons which turn a person to be a criminal. A person learns more while in prison than when he lives in the society.

Prison service is one of the toughest jobs. Hence, training is very much warranted for this job. The society has the responsibility to train the prisoners about the present society and prepare them for a better life. Only then, they will improve to be back as normal persons in the society.

Just like the selfless service provided by the doctors to the patients, jail officials should also give selfless service to the prisoners who have been indicted by the society for certain reasons. The prison officials perform the duty of reforming the prisoners to become good to be a part of the normal society. Hnece, this service is a noble service.

In order to understand a nation in a better way, one has to observe the way in which prisoners are treated and conducted. Nelson Mandela has remarked that only this can give an idea whether the country is refined enough to its citizens. Unless a person visits the jail in anation, he cannot get the complete idea about that nation.

In the convocation, 2 prison supervisors from Kerala who completed 9 months training were given certificates. 4 Assistant Prison officers from Tamil Nadu and 3 prison officers from Karnataka were given 9 months training and certificates.

Goa Prison department Deputy Supervisor Mr. Pennekar, Former DIG of Prison department Mr. Munivel, Lecturers Ms. Beula Immanuel, Mr. Kanakaraj, and Ms Rita, Advocate Ms. Radhika, and other participated in the convocation.

Deputy director Mr. Fadarudin proposed vote of thanks.
