On the very auspicious occasion of the Full Moon Day during the Sacred Tamil Month of Margazhi, lakhs of devotees undertook ‘Girivalam in Thiruvannamalai (mountain) temple from Thursday morning till Friday Morning.
The famous Thiruvannamalai temple represents ‘Fire’ among the 5 elements of Mother Nature of Lord Siva and is well-known for the concept of undertaking ‘girivalam, (taking walk around the mountain with temple atop).
The devotees have strong faith that by taking this 14 km trek along the mountain of the‘Fire’ form of Lord Siva in Thruvannamalai temple, and having a Darshan of ‘Ashta-lingas (8 lingams), and the Lord
Arunachaleswara and His Consort Unnamulaiamman will get their heart’s desires fulfilled. Taking girivalam on a full moon day is considered even more auspicious and hence swarms of devotees come to Thiruvannamalai to undertake girivalam on Full Moon Days.
On the auspicious occasion of Full Moon Day dueing the Tamil sacred month of Margazhi, the administration of Thruvannamalai Temple had announced that devotees can undertake‘Girivalam’ from 6.34 PM on Thurday evening (24th December) till 5.26 PM on Friday (25th December.
In this scenario, Thursday being a government holiday, the devotees in large numbers had started gathering and undertaking girivalam right from Thursday morning (24th December). The crowd of devotees started swelling as the eveing approached from 5.00 PM.
The devotees lighted camphor lamp in front of the Rajagopuram (the temple main tower) at 7.00 PM and started undertaking girivalam.
With passing time, till the early morning on Friday, the crowd of devotees swelled up as they undertook girivalam and had Darshans of Lord Arunchaleswara & His Consort Sri Unnamulaiamman.
Transport Corporations of various states, including Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Karnataka, and Pudhucherry had organised over 2000 special buses to facilitate the visit of the devotees. These buses were operating at the 9 temporary stalls set up around the city of Thiruvannamalai.
