‘Opinion-seeking’ meeting on ‘Smart City’/’Model City’ at the office of Vellore Corporation!

city1A ‘opinion-seeking’ meeting was conducted at the office of the Vellore city corporation under the leadership of city mayor on ‘smart city’/’model city’ yesterday, Tuesday, 28th July.

Vellore city Mayor Ms. Karthiyayini presided over the meeting seeking suggestions/opinions to covert Vellore into a model city or smart city yesterday, 28th July.

Commissioner Ms Janaki, Engineer Balasubramian and Deputy Mayor Chockalingam led the meeting.

Regional Officers, Traders’ Association members, residents’ association representatatives, public and Corporation officials participated in this meeting.

While addressing the gathering, Mayor Karthiyayini informed that all development projects are set be taken up to convert Vellore into a smart city or model city with the aid from World Bank. With this, the development activities of the city will be executed. All basic amenties will be provided in the city.

Then, the participants put up various suggestions:

Councillor Suryachai: Only 2 areas – Katpadi & Sathuvachary have developed in Vellore city. Other arts are yet to develop. Drinking water pipelines in several areas get broken. A squad should be formed to attend to these breakages within 24 hours. Ring-road project must be expedited to reduce traffic congestion. Shelters must be provided  for the bus stops under the city corporations.

Traders’ Association President Gnanavelu: It has been announced that Vellore Nethaji market will be demolished and a new construction will be taken up. If the design/expectations are explained, we can build the new construction on our own. We will pay the rent as per the prevailing market rate. Toilet facilities must be set up in the market area.

Councillor Kothandapani: Motor vehicle workshop is located at Peumugai near Vellore. If all the mechanics shops currently in Bypass Road are shifted to that area in Perumugai, traffic congestions would not occur. The current cement roads have to be converted into tar roads. The only, there will be provision for storage of rain water.

Subramani on behalf of Commercial Complex: We have bought 35 acres of land in Melmonavur on behalf of 11 traders’ association dealing with rice, jaggery, and nine-grains. We want a commercial complex to be constructed here. If this is taken up, all the wholesale traders will shift to this new complex. Trucks/Lorries traffic in Mandi Street will reduce to a great extent.  Corporation should get government approval for this proposal.

Ayyappan from Sathuvachary: Corporation Staff must visit every house and receive the garbage and remove the same. Corporation should set up many parks in the city having amusement features for children.

Others suggested that parks, sports grounds, and drainage system should be constructed in the city. Roads must be widened.

All street light should be switched on and function. Basic infrastructure facilities, small bus stations, and more bus stops should be set up.

Mayor Karthiyayini explained that both central and state governments will provide financial assistance to convert Vellore into a smart city/model city.

With this aid, a new large commercial complex with parking facility in the 3rd regional Office and renovation of Nethaji Market Parking Facility will be taken up. Approval from the Department of Archaeology will be taken.

The biggest problem is the garbage. As garbage is dumped in Sadhupperi, problems of pollution of the area as well as groundwater are encountered. There were objections from the new areas when proposals to shift to a new place were made.

Hence, projects like converting garbage to manure and recycling have to be taken up in the respective areas. Public should make decision and give place for this to be set up in these areas.

Commissioner Ms Janaki requested the public to stop using plastic bags and covers.
