This ghastly incident sent a deep shock wave among the other Sahitya Academy Award Winners and authors in the literary circle.

As a mark of protest against this ghastly incident and in general as a protest against authors being attacked, and in order to express their disapproval against growing religion-based atrocities, several authors have returned the Sahitya Academy Awards won by them.

So far, 30 authors have returned their Sahitya Academy Awards.

In this scenario, Sahitya Academy organized an emergency meeting of its executive committee for discussing on this issue.

The meeting was presided by the Sahitya Academy President, Mr. Viswanath Prasad. Vice-president Mr. Chandrasekhara Gambar and 20 executive committee members participated in the meeting. The meeting lasted 3hours.

After the meeting, executive Committee Member, Mr. K. Nachimuthu has a session with press reporters. He informed that a condolence resolution was passed about the murder of author Kalburgi and other authors who had passed away. A resolution was passed against the violence on authors and against the ghastly murders.

Another resolution was passed requesting the authors who had surrendered their awards and the member who resigned to reconsider their decisions.

All the resolutions were passed unanimously.

Strong condemning resolutions were passed against the recent trend against freedom of opinion, violence on authors, and the mind-set against tolerance.

Letters will be sent to the Central & State governments on the above issues. A protesting resolution was passed on behalf of Karnataka Sahitya Academy, the very next day after the shooting of author Kalburgi.

Sahitya Academy Awards are not given by the government. It is a pity some authors have expressed regrets against certain incidents by returning these awards. These authors should get over their resentment in course of time and should reconsider their act and take their awards back.
