The government-funded Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETP) at Ranipet that use the latest technology of reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration and steam evaporation towards achieving Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD), have begun to recycle the treated effluent back into leather processing, Director of the Ranipet Tannery Effluent Treatment Company Limited (RANITEC) Said, That they were planning to establish a 2 MW solar power generator to tide over the crisis, with bank loans, as the government assistance is available only for smaller power projects.
Around 95 per cent of the treated effluent was being recycled back to the member tanning units, where around 87 small tanning units have established a CETP using the same technology as that of the RANITEC,95 per cent of the effluent from the tanneries was sent back to the tanneries for using the same in production line.
The Zero Liquid Discharge system had helped in reducing the pollution load in the tanning process. The plants would help tanneries consume less water for production, reducing underground fresh water extraction, while recycling quality water in production line that would reduce pollution load for the CETPs.
