Tannery workers at SIPCOT Ranipet protest with siege at Collector’s Office

SipcotFollowing the recent accident when the effluent tank of one of the tanneries burst when 10 persons died, the electric power supply for these factories were cut. This has rendered the workers jobless. The workers surrounded the Vellore District Collector’s office in protest. There was some excitement.

Over 200 workers reached collector’s office yesterday (Monday, 2nd March). They surrounded the office. They gave a petition to the collector.

There is an effluent treatment plant (Phase-1) in our locality. The ffluent tank, 100’ long, 100’ wide, and of 15’ height, was used for treating the effluents brought from the nearby tanneries.

During last January, a part of the effluent treatment tank collapsed suddenly and the effluent gushed out. 10 employees who were sleeping in the premises died because of this after experiencing breathing problems.

Following this, the district administration decided to shut all the 86 tanneries in SIPCOT Phase-1 and cut off the power supply. The factories were sealed.

As a result, over 1 lakh persons who were working in direct & indirect connections with the tanneries lost their jobs.

Without any income, we are extremely hard-put for subsistence and educating our children.

Hence, we request that the electric power supply should be restored immediately to facilitate to go back to our jobs.
