What does election mean? What are voters’ responsibilities? A survey

images (3)Legislative Assembly Elections are scheduled to be conducted in the state of Tamil Nadu in 2 months’ time.

All political parties have already started various campaign activities to attract voters, forming alliances, making manifestos, evolving campaign strategies, and to capture power.

The voters have been patiently watching this.

Though the voting community appears benign & innocent, it is well worth remembering that voters are ‘all-powerful’. They have the capacity to throw people at peak down in the dumps while elevating some others from an ordinary position to a peak of power.

It is just worth mentioning that the elections, which are conducted once in 5 years, are not in any way similar to temple festivals! They have some supreme purpose. They provide the opportunity to the common public to elect the right persons worthy of power. Remember, missing thic chance means that we have to wait for another 5 years. So, it is important that we use, the public use this opportunity in the right way by electing the right candidates.

What is an election?

Elections are the means in a democratic country when the voting public elect the right representative among them to take care of their needs and to provide safety & security.

However, the candidates who are elected tend to become the bosses of te public in a short period of time.

In the prevailing scenario, it has become almost impossible for a common citizen to contest in elections. Only those who are affluent and eminent can afford to contest elections.

However, the fact those elections are for anyone & everyone. The noble thought of doing good to people is the criterion that is good enough to contest in elections.

In a democratic country, the citizens vote in the elections to decide who will be people’s representative in power and thus they are the ‘king-makers’.

Hence, it is utterly wrong to believe that the voters are mere dummies and the elected candidates are all-powerful.

In fact, voters are the kings – if not ‘king-makers’. And the elected candidates are only the servants of the people who voted for them. This fact must be clearly understood by every voter/citizen.

In many countries including a democratic country like India, some people tend to believe and hold the electors responsible when candidates without the right qualities and having shady backgrounds get elected.

Please understand here that it is the public/citizen who failed to vote who are responsible to bring the wrong people to power.

In fact, the tendency among some of the voters to think that their failure to cast their single vote will not, in any way, change the outcome of the elections, and hence, there is nothing wrong if they refrain from voting.

Note that this is the tendency not to vote which is responsible for bringing the wrong elements to power.

So, top priority must be accorded to the effort to make every citizen about importance and duty to cast their votes even before advising them who to vote.

Another tendency is to prefer to vote for the candidate who is likely to win. The public must be made aware that it is not important to worry about whether the candidates they voted for won or lost the elections. It is the aspect whether their votes were in favors of the honest & the best candidate.

The voters should  keep trend of the facts such as who is the candidate, what has he done up to the elections, what he has promised to do after the elections, and whether he had kept his promises and realized them and then only decide to vote.

The voter should not cast vote with the influence of thoughts like it is a big & powerful political party or the candidate is a eminent & powerful and holds clout, etc. Place priority on the thought whether this candidate will do good if elected irrespective of his power or political clout or party clout. Vote for the candidate who you believe would do good without any hesitations. Let the time decide about the winners & losers
