The hike in railway fares came into play from yesterday. There is a 2 paisa per kilometer increase in electric train fares. A ticket from Beach Station to Tambaram now costs Rs. 10 compared to previous cost of Rs. 7.
Tickets that were Rs. 7, Rs. 8 and Rs. 9 are now Rs. 10 but those that were Rs. 6 are now Rs. 5. Fares have been revised according to distance – destinations that are farther have been increased and those that are closer, decreased.

In disappointing news for wine lovers, TASMAC shops will be closed on 25th, 26th and 27th of this month in view of Milad-un-Nabi, Republic Day and Thiruvalluvar Day.
A major loss amounting to almost Rs. 250 crores is expected to the TASMAC shops as the 26th and 27th fall on a weekend when sales are traditionally high. The average daily sales of such shops is around Rs. 80 crores, on festival days like Christmas, News Years’ and Pongal, sales can be as high as Rs. 400 crores, say officials.
