Thirteen boats which were in very dilapidated condition lying in the moat at Vellore Fort have been removed and handed over to the department of Archaeology.
Earlier, boat riding was taken up as there was an increase in the number of tourists.
The tourists enjoyed a pleasant ride in 13 boats. The boats were manufactured under the Tourism Department and maintained by the local corporation.
When Vellore district was formed, Vellore Corporation took over the responsibility for the boats. However, the boats required a lot of repair work and hence the boat rides were stopped.
The boats remained in the moat. However, it was observed that some people were using the boats in dangerous condition with the children.
In order to prevent any possible accidents, a decision was taken to remove these boats and hand them over to the Department of Archaeology.
A decision on resumption of boat ride will have to be decided by the District Administration.
