Vellore Corporation has decided to change the current frequency of distribution of drinking water once in 15 days to once in 7 days.
Each individual has to be provided with 135 litres of drinking water per day.
Vellore needs to distribute 69.96 Lakhs litres of drinking water.
Palaru & Ponnai Rivers are the main sources from where 12 million litres of drinking water are taken per day depending on the groundwater resources.
However, the groundwater level has dwindled over the last 4years and hence, only 7 million litres of water per day is taken from these 2 rivers through bore wells. Otteri supplies 2.3 Lakh litres daily.
Under these stringent conditions, drinking water was distributed once in 15 days.
With the recent copious rains, the water levels have risen in most sources. This will facilitate distribution of drinking water once in 7 days.
Activates to arrest pilferage of drinking water have also been initiated. Once this is completed, the drinking water supply once in 7 days will commence.
