Social welfare enthusiasts in Vellore expect that the toilets maintained under the control of City Corporation should be allowed free for the public in order to improve the city’s overall health aspect.
There 6 pay-mode toilets, 2 free urinals, and 2 urinals for differently-abled people maintained by Vellore Corporation in the new Veloore Bus Terminus.
The urinals for the differently-abled are yet to be opened (awaiting inauguration).
The 2 free urinals are in open outdoor locations and generate quite a stink in the surrounding areas.
Out of the 6 pay-mode toilets, only 2 toilets are provided wit electrically pump-run filling of water tanks.
For the balance pay-mode toilet, water is procured from tanker-lorries.
Health aspect is totally neglected in the prevailing conditions. They have not been maintained properly for a long period with even the doors being out of order.
Without any latch, the user has to be more apprehensive while using these toilets.
The old bus terminus also has 2 similar pay-mode toilets.
At least the males have 2 free urinals. Women don’t even have this facility.
Total neglect of health aspect, improper maintenance of pay-mode toilets, water shortage, and higher charges have all led to the public using open spaces for this purpose!
The bus passengers are driven to keeping their noses tighly shut while enerinf the bust terminus!
With the pay-mode toilets being given to private operators on contract, the revenue earned from this is also not of much use!
.It would be advisable to follow Chennai Metro in this regard! The Koyambedu inter-city bus terminus in Chennai Metro has toilets which are free for public use.This facility prevented from the public urinating at open spaces.
Vellore city social welfare enthusiast feel that the example set up by Chennai should be followed immediately in otder to improve the health aspect.
While contacting the mayor, Ms. Karthiyayini assured that efforts are being undertaken to improve the stations. The pay-mode toilets at the new bus-terminus are supposed to be revenue-earning spots. However, for improvement, they will be made free for public. There is also a manpower shortage for maintenance. Efforts are being made to locate help from outside sources such as social welfare organisations. Action will be taken after due consultation with city council members.
